Friday, June 12 - A historic night in Toronto ended in a share of the spoils. Canada played their first ever World Cup match on home soil and couldn't find a winner against a Bosnia & Herzegovina side that came to do a lot more than just survive.
Bosnia stunned the co-hosts early. Jovo Lukic broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, becoming an instant hero for the thousands of Bosnian fans who had taken over the streets of Toronto long before kickoff. A nation of 3.5 million, with a diaspora army already living in Canada, made BMO Field feel anything but a home game for the Canadians.
Canada dominated possession, 60% vs 40%, and had 13 shots to Bosnia's 8 - but only 3 of those were on target. Bosnia, meanwhile, were clinical. Four shots on target, one goal. The efficiency gap told the real story.
Cyle Larin rescued a point in the 79th minute, heading Canada level and sending the stadium into a frenzy. It was a deserved equalizer on the balance of play but Bosnia will feel they left something behind - they were minutes away from one of the biggest results in their short World Cup history.
Canada controlled the game without really threatening it. 390 passes, 9 corners, 78% pass accuracy - but only 3 shots on target across 90 minutes. Bosnia committed 20 fouls and spent most of the second half defending, yet their goalkeeper was the busier of the two for large stretches.
The real stat that hurts Canada: they had everything but the finishing touch. Without Alphonso Davies, the cutting edge simply wasn't there.
Canada - 1 pt
Bosnia & Herzegovina - 1 pt
Switzerland - 0 pts
Qatar - 0 pts
Both teams now face Switzerland and Qatar in the coming days. A win in either of those games could be enough to advance. Group B is wide open.
